I have forever felt disconnected to the traditional publisher; I never felt connected to the political analyst, the posh food critic, nor the editor. Only with our recent guest speakers did ‘fine dining’ resemble any form of sense (and in all honesty, it still hasn’t quite clicked). But in the reporting from ‘The Rookie’ Madeleine Chapman in the Spinoff’s duet of articles “The Critic and The Rookie” finally made me feel my views were validated, I (as someone that doesn’t have money to burn) had representation in the media!
Madeleine had some hot takes about spending 600 dollars on a five-hour dining experience, and I wanted to hear them. Most of it had to do with not understanding what to expect and being seemingly underwhelmed by the experience. Mad focused on most the thing I would when going to a restaurant, price. When she questioned the mixing of spirits – she did it for the same reasons this Northland boy would; not the concerns of flavour or class – but the effect it would have!
Madeleine discussed with us the hot takes that are being offered on Instagram by accounts such as EatLitFood; it resonated with me. I even have a friend who does the same deal. Long-time friend Sophie Coleman runs the account ‘NoodzReviews’. Started in high-school Sophie saw the need for a funny, relatable character in which broke-ass high school students could turn to know the best way to utilise their $2.50 food budget.
This is only the beginning – soon everyone will have a reviewer for their needs!
