Reflecting on research panels and back on my own thoughts, I looked in the mirror and wondered… how the heck could I possibly create research that is intellectually stimulating and has a greater impact beyond the benefit of myself? Big philosophical statement I know! but it has definitely been a thought that has left me pondering after Dr Patrick Thompsens wise words.

Going into research with all its daunting expectations and my naive sense of approach, Dr Patrick Thompsen explained his experience conducting research on Korean gay men in Seattle in a way that was comforting and exciting. He reassures us that great research comes from being yourself. As cheesy as that sounds; it really does. Having a research topic that resonates with your passions and lived experience gives it a spice of authenticity that makes it unique, which is important in standing out within the academic community and allowing your research to be heard. Dr Patrick Thompsen also mentioned that it is ok to allow your research to evolve. Your first research endeavour is not likely to plan out how you expected, so it is important to be open throughout the process.

After reflecting upon his experience, in life and in research, has helped me become confident in pursuing my future research endeavors, simply by understanding that staying true to yourself is the greatest power to any research.
